Finding the Right Lawyer for Your Case
Any legal procedure or case can be difficult, especially if the issue involves multiple parties. While the law is a way for impartial rules to be applied to various scenarios, it can be really confusing to navigate the terms and language of the law. Despite popular jokes about lawyers, they truly work to help people not just understand legal issues, but also their rights and freedoms. How do you find the right lawyer? While there isn’t one set of guidelines, there are some things to consider prior to hiring a lawyer.
Doing Background Research
If you are looking to be represented by an active lawyer, make sure they are allowed to practice in California. This means they’ll be a member of the state bar or any equivalent institution. However, being a member of the state bar is the minimum. First, try and see what kind of legal case you’re dealing with. For example, if you have been arrested for a criminal act, then you’ll be looking for a criminal lawyer. If you have been injured and seeking compensation for the injury, then it is best to speak with a civil litigator. The smaller law firms or boutique offices might only specialize in one field of the law, but larger firms can have lawyers dedicated to multiple aspects.
Meeting the Lawyer
Once you’ve done the background search and are meeting the lawyers in person, have some questions handy for the initial consultation. It is important to ask the lawyer about their experience and why they can help you with your specific case. Ask them about potential outcomes and goals, fees and billing, future steps, and much more. Make sure to feel comfortable with the lawyer and figure out whether you will be able to communicate with them throughout the entire process. At Law Advocates Group we have experienced lawyers in many different fields of law such as entertainment, estate planning, criminal, civil, personal injury, and others.
